Castle Lanes in Racine did it again. For the fourth straight year, the rustic, northern Wisconsin lodge- themed center at 5615 Castle Court in Racine has been voted the Best Bowling Center in Racine County. A prime example of Castle Lanes’ success is its league programs, which are completely filled up. In fact, some teams had to be turned away. “All of our leagues are full,” Castle proprietor Phil Ontko said. “A few teams were surprised they could not get in. It’s a good start to the season. “Considering the way the economy is, people have a lot less discretionary income, but people still find time for us. We’re very grateful.” In addition to being one of the 95 bowling alleys you must see before you die (2008 Bowlers Journal International), the center has added another award of sorts. It has been included as one of Bowling Alleys USA’s Most Unique centers in the nation, in the same category that includes Holler House in Milwaukee, which houses the oldest sanctioned lanes in the nation; the 80-lane National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.; and the White House bowling alley in Washington, D.C. “We try to deliver really entertaining escapism,” Ontko said. “When you come to Castle, it’s a night out with the girls or the guys. We’ve been able to deliver that.” Article by Racine Journal Times — Robb Luehr
