Is E-mail Dead?

Click on 'View My Blog' above to see all my posts.

Clara Shih, author of "The Facebook Era," says social networks are slowly replacing email. I know you're saying, "Fred, I just figured this email thing out and now you're saying its dead?" No it's not dead, but it is being replaced by Facebook and Twitter for "social communications". Email will always leave a "paper trail" and will be perfectly acceptable for business, but from a social standpoint, that's another… Continue

Everybody Is Nobody

Click on 'View My Blog' above to see all my posts.

How much time do you and your staff spend on trying to get everyone to come bowling? After the flier is made, what happens next? Do you speak to everyone who comes into the center? Do you go to businesses in the area and distribute fliers?

If you are trying to go after everybody, you are going after nobody and unfortunately that's who usually responds to your offer. With open play being soft… Continue

The Value of Intolerance

Click on ‘View My Blog’ above to see all my posts.

It seems obvious, but yet it is not well understood; when developing a new operating concept or model, there has to be a strong motivation for change. The problem with change is not a lack of ideas on how to change a process. The problem does not lie in the efforts to change the physical appearance or the function of the business. The problem is not a matter of acquiring the equipment needed to operate the new… Continue

Fredquarters Marketing by Fred Kaplowitz

Finding the right people is difficult. Keeping them is even more challenging.

But, would you pay someone to leave your company?

This is exactly what does. Haven't heard of Zappos? They are an Internet retailer that sells shoes (even bowling shoes). They are known for their customer service. Internally they have a saying: "We are a service company that happens to sell shoes. And apparel. And handbags. And accessories. And… Continue

'Now' Revisited

Click on 'View My Blog' above to see all my posts.

In the last post I made the point that the only time anything is accomplished is in the present moment. Nothing has changed since the last post. All accomplishment occurs in the present moment. The present moment is made relevant however by both the past and the future. Simply put, if you want to make the most out of now you must have an appreciation for the past and expectations for… Continue

It Has to Be NOW!

Click on 'View My Blog' above to see all my posts.

The pace of life seems to be accelerating with every passing day. Certainly the development of internet based communications has collapsed the time float which existed with communications throughout history. We no longer have to wait for a letter to be delivered or even an overnight package of information to arrive. It is possible to have instant access to others and a wealth of information. The time float… Continue

No Problem, Big Problem

Click on 'View My Blog' above to see all my posts.

The term ‘auto-response’ has become familiar to most people with even the slightest exposure to electronic communications. Most all of us have received an almost instant auto-response message stating, the person you are sending your message to will not be checking emails for a period of time, so don’t expect a response. To some those messages are helpful. To me they are just another piece of electronic… Continue

Getting Started

Those who know me, but not well, know I say a lot. Those that know me well know that I have a lot to say. Having a lot to say is an admirable but useless trait unless someone is listening. In the past I have had the benefit of a captive audience as I spoke various groups within Bowling, and particularly within the businesses operated by my company, SpareZ, Inc. Now as Past… Continue

Ready for the new normal? or, (the death of voicemail as a popular customer feature!)

The new normal is everything online, all the time. Business is quickly moving to the new normal of "cloud computing" where everything, the software and associated business logic, reside and function remotely off a vendors server, not on a computer in your office. Some would say this is all "new" but in fact this has been around for years and your customers are probably using this type of technology on a weekly, even daily basis.

What are the benefits of cloud computing?… Continue

Maximizing Holiday Party Sales

As the holiday season approaches, maximizing party sales maybe a thought on many of your minds. Here are some tips that will help increase party sales

1. Reach out to people/groups/associations that have had parties with you in the past. Many of them may be receptive to joining you again. Now is a good time to get an early start on this important sales project. If you are not building a database with this historic information, now is a good time to begin.

2. Try Constant… Continue

Leaders of the world bowl.

To be in with the "in" , you've got to bowl. Putin bowls! Obama bowls! Who else bowls? The next summit will be on the lanes. :)

A pivital time for bowling

"I admire what you are doing for you good friend. Friends and family that you love and love you back, honor, integrity and a deep appreciation for life are the most important things a man can have. "

Jeff Bojay USBC President

Mark Roth the "Father of the Modern Game of Bowling" Befriended me when I was 13 years old.

He inspired me to become the man I am today. I worked hard and became a Member of the PBA since 1979. I opened my first bowling pro shop at 17… Continue

You might wonder why I have MR.202 by my name. In 1985 in Toledo Ohio during the Pba Trust Corp National Championship Tour. during my 2nd 8 game qualifying Block I Bowled 202 202 202 202 202 202 202 202 +16

I had not tossed a 5 bagger all day much less three strikes in a row. The lanes were tuff for me. I was crossing with Pete Mcordic, Mike Aulby and The Great Joe Norris. I'm so glad I had a chance to befriend Joe, what a great guy. At 80 years young wearing knickers he hit the… Continue

bah humbah

I don't like how online bowling merchants post new balls for sale that are not even released. To top it off they'll put a price on it to the public that i can barely get from a distributor. Geez! (i think it cheapens the ball myself) This is what us in the pro shop industry have to deal with. Not to fun, kinda takes the excitement out of pushing bowling balls.

I am so glad I was able to go to Bowl Expo. It is always good to see people face to face that you work with on the phone every day. It is like meeting up with old friends. I am always amazed by all the activity, products, and people from all over the world who are involved in the business of bowling. I am proud to be a part of it all.
