Trouble Shooting Foamy Draft Beer

Trouble Shooting Foamy Draft Beer

Draft beer is a sensitive product which requires certain parameters to be just right in order to dispense properly: Temperature, Pressure, Appropriate Propellant and a Good Beer Dispensing System Design.

1. Does…

Understanding Beverage Cost Percentages

The unfortunate reality of operating a bowling center bar is dealing with the negative affect on profits due to shrinkage. In particular, bar operations are likely to have lost potential profits due to careless draft beer pouring by bartenders, unauthorized giveaways, over-pouring liquor shots to boost tips, cash skimming and outright product theft. Joseph Thompson with Stock-Taker, a beverage auditing company in Atlanta, Georgia, has determined that the average bar is missing more…

Wait Till Next Year

Another Super Bowl has come and gone and we are no closer to having a

bowling commercial on the Big Game (watched this year by only 108 million

people) than we were last year.

This year, I had an opportunity to interview for a BPAA Board position and

as we went through the various interviewee type questions, I was informed

that the mission statement of the BPAA was to increase the proprietor’s

I buy that lock stock and bowling…

Your Strategy is Your Business

At the Bowling Summit this week in San Antonio, TX I had an opportunity to

sit through a social media session or two. What struck me was the single

mindedness and sometimes seemingly, frantic need to be “noticed, opened,

clicked, engaged” as a measure of your marketing success.

I always thought it was  ultimately to have someone buy something from me.

It was all great stuff and I picked up a few nuggets from the speakers vast

knowledge. But, and it’s a big…

A Blog Is Not A Dead Bug On Your Windshield

A couple of day ago I was at a friend's house when he and I began talking

about our respective blogs. His granddaughter a precocious child of 6 years

old, said, "What's a blog? It sounds like a dead bug."  After we all had a

good laugh, I said to myself, "Self, out of the mouths of

babes, comes truth".

Yes, Megan, some blogs really are dead bugs on a windshield; some lose the

reader in about 30 seconds and some are so inconsistently posted that

they look like…

Are You Looking For Bowlers In All The Wrong places?

The answer is either yes or no and my guess is YES. Otherwise league

bowlers across the country would be growing, not atrophying.

I mean if 72 million people bowl and 2+ million bowl in a league, you must

be looking in the wrong places to get new people…cause after all these

years, you would have had more by now, right?

On the other hand, maybe you are finding them, but you are losing more

each year then you are replacing.  But that is a whole other blog…

Why Starbucks Marketing Sucks.

Starbucks finally figured out

that there are lots of people who don’t like their “dark roasted” coffee,

but instead, prefer a milder blend.  So now Starbucks has finally

introduced “Blonde” roast to satisfy those who prefer a non Starbucks

taste. (Bold, bitter and burnt!!)

I’m no super genius, but I have hated Starbucks coffee for years because

it was TOO strong and TOO bitter. And I know I wasn't the only one out

there.  Lots of people told me the same…

Its OK To Ask For Directions. Really

Seth Godin, in one of his recent blogs was talking about starting projects

and getting stuff done.  His main point was:“Not enough people believe they

are capable of productive initiative.”

And that’s kind of a sad conclusion that he comes to and while I deeply

respect my hero, Seth, I kind of disagree with him. I think people

sometimes believe they are more capable than they actually are; if not why

do so many restaurants fail? Why do so many new products…

"What If We Did...?"

Going on vacation is not what it used to be. Even if it is for a few days.

Before cellphones, computers, text messages and other 21st century

communication technology, we simply called our clients or faxed them a

brief note that went something like this:

(Embedded image moved to file: pic07323.jpg)

"We'll be on vacation the week of ____ and if you have any questions,

please call   ________.  We'll be checking in almost every day so if you

need us, please…

What Bathrooms can Teach You About Marketing.

Years ago, when I was the chief

marketing officer for a large bowling chain I was sitting in a management

meeting when the subject of business building ideas came up. As we took our

turns around the table to discuss and offer our ideas, I made the statement

that “Everything Is Marketing!”

Needless to say, the other department heads, in typical corporate man

style, put on their defensive shield and interpreted this statement as a

“power grab.”

I was…

Enter the "Strange Zone" and Improve Your Business

Earlier today I posted on Facebook a little ditty about getting into your

“strange zone”.              By strange zone I do not mean weird, freaky or

far out zone, I mean "different", or "new", almost a “discomfort zone” if

you will.

(Embedded image moved to file: pic21710.jpg)

It seems to me that, as I visit centers around the country, one overriding

characteristic of successful centers and their owners or managers stands

That is the…

5 Tips To Increase Your Facebook Effectiveness in 2013

While I receive tons of emails from centers across the country, mostly I

receive “sales fliers” from centers across the planet which, unfortunately

are being blocked, not read or worse deteriorating any brand equity you may

have built.

So…….considering that Facebook now consumes allot of the planets time, I

wanted to share these statistics with you; information so you can

understand the importance of managing this very important communication

tool as well as…

Why you Need "Better" Customers in 2013

Frequently, I have written about the need to get better customers; by

“better customers”, I simply mean not that they are better people, but the

fact that they have more discretionary income to spend on leisure and

entertainment.  This observation was made via many on site visits to

location based entertainment facilities (LBE), whether they are bowling

centers, FEC’s or merely birthday party venues.

So yesterday, while wrapping up some end of the year stuff, I…

A Christmas Gift Just For You

Christmas Eve 2012: "...and the stockings were hung by the chimney with

care in hopes that St Nicholas would soon be there."

I love this poem by Clement Moore.  It was written in 1823 and is probably

more responsible for our views of Santa Claus than anything else. To me, it

speaks to the hope that not only little children have, but adults have as

well, when it comes to Santa Claus and, magically, getting presents.

I think we carry that hope through our our…

Fred's Marketing Rule of Repetition

Do you expect ONE email to bring you hundreds of new customers for whatever

event it is your promoting?

Heck, ONE doesn't even buy you one awareness note!!!  I know i have said

this before, but i need to repeat it to get you to remember it. That's what

this whole deal is about...and NO there is not a specific number of times

you need to say something to get people to remember.

It depend son the offer.  See, if i send you just ONE notice form…

Marketing Lesson #109 From The Newspaper Guy

Over the past several weeks I have received little notes, slipped under my

front door, from the newspaper delivery person, the postman, the gardener

type person and a few other people whose names I do not know.  No doubt,

many of you have had this same experience.

All of them were happy to wish me a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday and a

Happy New Year and having SIGNED THEIR NAME to a card, THEY encouraged me

to say thank you for “their service” this holiday…

Job # 1

There comes a time in every day when you have to make a decision about

growing your business -yes every day you need to be thinking about growing

your business –hey that’s YOUR job#1 – and when you need to, you make a

decision based upon some set of logic

But what I have found, in my travels, is that many people make a decision

because the core premise and solution APPEALS DIRECTLY TO THEM. They can

identify with it; relate to it, like it and therefore they…
